Educational Exhibitions

25.2-31.5.2012
Alpha Bank Cultural Centre, Nafplion

Two exhibitions of an educational nature organised by the Art Collection and the Numismatic Collection Sections are running for yet another year at the Alpha Bank Cultural Centre in Nafplio.

The exhibitions entitled “Printmaking and its Techniques” and “Learning about Coins” are intended for primary and secondary education pupils in order to familiarise them with the art of printmaking and ancient coins.

The exhibition “Printmaking and its Techniques” aims to illustrate the three basic printmaking methods: xylography, chalcography and lithography.

The respective artworks which belong to the Bank’s Collection, as well as tools and printing blocks, are exhibited in three specially-arranged rooms, while explanatory texts and photographs describe in detail the process of producing a print. At the same time, visitors may view in an adjacent room the film “The Print”, a production of the Athens School of Fine Arts, which records the creation of a print at the workshop. In addition, an educational game has been produced, which re-enacts the creation of a print on a touch screen personal computer.

The exhibition “Learning about Coins” presents the history of the ancient coin since it was invented and its evolution during antiquity. The pupil-visitor is invited to learn about the means of transaction in the pre-coin era, to become acquainted with the first coin in history, with the minting techniques, with the iconography and the circulation of ancient coins. Furthermore, the child learns how to cultivate his/her observation and judgemental skills and receives valuable information regarding Greek history and civilization. Twenty five ancient coins from the Collection of Alpha Bank are exhibited in a specially-arranged room while the film “The History of the Coin”, a production of the Bank, is screened. Moreover, at the end of the visit the children are offered an educational booklet about the ancient coins with texts and games.

The exhibitions will be showcased until May 31, 2012.
