Geometry meets movement and light

Yannis Michas’ 2 artworks converse through an austere, yet particularly eloquent visual language, where geometry meets movement and light:

On the reflective metal surface, the curved lines form fragile lattices that appear to be pulsating. In this way, they challenge the static nature of the geometric form.

A harmonious pair

In Untitled (yellow composition), the yellow colour is organised in an inverse triangular shape, to create a sense of concentration and downward movement. The composition exudes power and inner intensity, like a force focused on a single point.

In contrast, in Untitled (red composition), the vertical red zone adds rhythm and balance. The lattice develops in an upward direction, bringing to mind progression, evolution and continuous transformation. The red colour serves as a carrier of energy and vitality, enhancing the sense of movement.

Together, the 2 artworks compose a harmonious pair, where order and freedom, structure and fluidity co-exist creatively.

In this way, the artist turns the geometric element from a strict mathematical shape into a live space, leading visitors to a visual and intellectual search.

His life in a nutshell

Yannis Michas was born in Athens in 1938. He studied Painting at the studio of Costas Iliadis from 1955 to 1958.

He then travelled to Paris, where he continued his studies in Painting and Interior Architecture at the École des Métiers d’Art, until 1962.

Favourite themes and artistic style

His influences by the constructivism movement were apparent in his first pieces, where he drew series of overlapping shapes, highlighted by complementary colours.

He is a well-known and distinguished artist, especially recognised for his compositions, which serve the geometric values of painting and sculpture. In fact, he mainly used geometric shapes and rules to form his personal language of expression.

His artistic output includes variations on basic geometric themes of any category, aimed at:

• Suggesting relationships.
• Referencing events.
• Capturing meetings and dialogues with life and the world.

A plethora of materials

Since 1974, Yannis Michas has been creating relief diptychs and triptychs, with different added materials, such as copper, wood or aluminium. At the same time, he sculpted a number of pieces, in an attempt to liberate the geometric form from the limits of the canvas.

During the 1980s, he created optical games with lattices, cartons and sheet metals, to capture the shadow of an object on canvas with colours and an aerograph.

In 1990 he returned to painting, creating pieces with oil on coloured wood, which were a quest for balance between 2 or more geometric shapes and lines on a flat surface.

A recognised artist

Yannis Michas’ work has been featured in solo exhibitions in Greece, and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
