New educational programme at the Banknote Museum

Over the 2025-2026 school year, the Banknote Museum on Corfu is hosting the new “CURRENCY and TRANSACTIONS. From Yesterday to Nowadays” educational programme for students aged 9-15, at the Museum’s permanent exhibition.

The aim of the programme

The new programme seeks to familiarise students with the history of currency and the evolution of transactions in Greece, from antiquity to the present day, through 6 historical periods:

  • Antiquity
  • Roman times
  • Byzantine world
  • Ottoman period
  • Modern Greek State
  • Nowadays

Through the rich printed material, magnetic boards, coin cards and search games, students:

  • Acquire considerable historical knowledge related to the first appearance and evolution of coins.
  • Discover the coins used by people in their transaction throughout all historical eras.
  • Find out when the first banknote came into circulation and when plastic money made its appearance.
  • Learn about the euro.
  • Are informed on modern transaction methods.
  • Discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Where: Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank, Agiou Spyridonos Square (Iroon Kypriakou Agona Square), 49100 Corfu
When: Thursdays and Fridays
Runs for: 1 hour
Suitable for: Students aged 9-15
Participation: Free of charge
