The Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank on Corfu partnered with the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society, the 2nd oldest philharmonic of the island, and together they hosted the innovative educational event “Musical tradition – Numismatic mementos”, from 14 to 18 May.

Their collaboration was centred around the celebration of the International Museum Day, which, this year, was dedicated to the intangible cultural heritage.

Aim of the event

The programme aimed at showcasing and promoting music education, an element directly linked to Corfu’s tradition and artistic output.

In fact, the 16 philharmonics on the island, listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, form the core of local cultural activity and social cohesion.

Activities for everyone

Over the 5 days of the event, more than 260 people participated in the activities: students from primary and secondary schools, members of the student section of the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society, colleagues and families with children.

Through the creative group activities, people had the opportunity to learn about aspects of Corfu’s musical tradition.

With the help of the visual material from the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society, the audience:

  • Studied musical instruments.
  • Discussed about great composers connected to the history and traditions of Corfu.

The events for the International Museum Day

On Friday 16 May, the head of the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society Archives, Mr Gerasimos Martinis, presented the history of the philharmonic, encouraging a discussion and children’s participation.

On Saturday 17 May, a woodwind ensemble from the Mantzaros Philharmonic took centre stage with its melodies, led by the teacher Mr Spyridon Alamanos.

The concert was held at one of the most central parts of the island, the Agiou Spyridonos Square, the location of the Banknote Museum.

At the same time, through the educational event, the audience:

  • Observed depictions on banknotes from Greece and other European countries.
  • Came into contact with musical instruments, great composers and famous opera buildings.
  • Gained a better understanding of the Greek and European musical, historical and cultural inventory.

With our participation in the International Museum Day, we strengthen our commitment to remain a lively and open space for all, promoting education, culture, development and social cohesion.
