The Alpha Bank Historical Archives participated in the scientific conference “Preservation and digitisation of documents and archive collections. Exploring ways to showcase the archival wealth of modern Sparti”, which took place in Mystras on 21 and 22 June 2025.

The conference was an initiative of the “Sparti 2034” Historical Research Organisation, held on the occasion of the upcoming 200-year anniversary since the founding of the modern city of Sparti.

43 historical archive representatives, conservators and researchers participated in the conference, shedding light on significant moments in the city’s history, through archive materials. A total of 750 people attended the conference – 80 in person and 670 online.

The participation of the Historical Archives

The Alpha Bank Historical Archives were represented by archivist and historian Tassos Stergiou. During his presentation, Mr Stergiou showcased archive material and rare historical documents from the Archives’ collection that:

  • Demonstrate Alpha Bank’s century-long presence in Sparti.
  • Highlight the contribution of the Archives’ sources to the study of Sparti’s history and economy.

At the same time, Mr Stergiou talked about the archiving software used by the Historical Archives, the storage conditions of its collections, as well as the overall work carried out regarding the preservation, protection, promotion and best use of the Alpha Bank Group’s history.

Also present at the conference was Alpha Bank Historical Archives archivist Katerina Vrekou.

The “Sparti 2034” Historical Research Organisation

The “Sparti 2034” Historical Reseach Organisation was founded in April 2023 by historian and researcher Nikolaos I. Karmoiris, on the occasion of the upcoming 200-year anniversary since the founding of modern Sparti (1834).

It aims to study, document, preserve and showcase the evolution of modern Sparti and the wider region of Lacedaemon and Laconia, in all its manifestations (social, political, architectural, athletic, cultural, folkloric, etc.), through the output of scientific work.
