The Numismatic Collection at the Athens Archaeology Festival

For the first time ever, the British School at Athens is hosting the Athens Archaeology Festival and invites young and old in a day full of myth and mystery from the past.

The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection is participating in the festival, drawing inspiration from the life of the mythical hero Heracles. The selected coins of the Collection depict Heracles’ life, labours and achievements.

Interactive workshop for young and old

The workshop on “The myth of Heracles on ancient coins” combines archaeology with mythology, and includes interactive games and numismatic secrets and stories about mythology’s most celebrated hero.

Participants have the opportunity to discover: 

• Which cities and rulers chose Heracles for their coins and why.
• On whose important king’s coins we see a depiction of Heracles.
• Why Heracles was such a beloved mythology hero.
• The values and ideals underlying his exploits.
