Maria Ziaka, Quadriptych

A personal and imaginative piece

The Quadriptych is part of the Alpha Bank Art Collection and is a typical sample of Maria Ziaka’s experimentations throughout her work.

The artist organises large, single-colour surfaces as palimpsests, as she places one atop the other, with the aim of creating an eloquent space that is both personal and imaginative.

At the same time, the influences from the years she studied in London are also evident through the Pop Art elements in the piece.

Monumentality with clear sensitivity

The piece evokes a feeling of monumentality without losing is sensitivity. It is a composition where light appears to emerge from colour itself, turning the surface into a space of thoughtful memory, energy and inner dialogue.

The repetition of the form motifs adds rhythm and musicality, creating an experience that unfolds gradually, revealing different elements with every observation.

Her life in a nutshell

Maria Ziaka was born in Preveza in 1948. She studied Painting at the Accademia di belle arti in Florence, from 1966 to 1970.

After finishing her studies in Italy, she travelled to England, where she studied Painting and Printmaking at Byam Shaw, City and Guilds of London Art School, and Hammersmith Chelsea in London from 1970 to 1974.

Expressionist style with bold colours

Maria Ziaka is a prolific artist, both as a painter and as a printmaker. She adopted, gradually shaped and ultimately solidified a common visual language that can be easily detected among all her pieces.

What sets her apart is her expressionist style, manifested with bold colours in unexpected combinations in her painting, and dense, disciplined forms of successive prints in her printmaking.

In her work, tradition interacts constructively with modern conquests, resulting in purely personal works of art.

A recognised artist

Since 1976, her pieces have been featured in many solo and group exhibitions in Athens and other cities in Greece.

At the same time, Maria Ziaka has participated in international exhibitions and Biennales. She is also a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece and the Greek Printmakers Association.
