Under the auspices of the Greek President

The commemorative exhibition “Uprootings, 1922-2022. Witnessing through Art” is hosted at the Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to mark the 100-anniversary since the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

The exhibition is held under the auspices of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Ms Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Thessaloniki: the ultimate refugee city

This painful anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe is especially important for the city of Thessaloniki. After 1922, and following the mandatory exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, Thessaloniki, itself devastated by the great fire of 1917, received 120,000 refugees from Asia Minor.

The refugees were gradually integrated into the city’s social and economic life, becoming key to its rebirth and evolution into a contemporary metropolis.

The sections of the exhibition

Drawing primarily on visual art creations, the uprooting is split into 2 sections:

  1. The Asia Minor Catastrophe.
  2. The more recent times, up to the present.
