The artists’ first steps

The juvenilia, even though lesser known, help in understanding the overall artistic journey.

They are not just a return to the initial stages of artistic creation, but also an invitation for reflection.

Aim of the exhibition

The exhibition showcases the artistic journey of 11 major male and female artists in 20th-century Greece.

At the same time, it explores the patterns, ideas and features in the early works of the artists, which gradually shaped their mature and unique artistic style.

The artists of the exhibition

The exhibition presents the artists who played a decisive role in shaping artistic creation in 20th-century Greece.

The artists of the exhibition are:

Spyros Vassiliou, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika, Yannis Tsarouchis, Yiannis Moralis, A. Tassos, Vasso Katraki, Jannis Spyropoulos, Alekos Kontopoulos, Dimitris Mytaras, Yannis Gaitis and Chryssa Romanos.

A joint event to study modern Greek artistic tradition

This is an initiative of the Benaki Museum, the Bank of Greece and the Ioannis F. Kostopoulos Foundation, in cooperation with their curators.

The team of curators looked into 11 male and female artists, based on their significant influence in shaping 20th-century art in Greece.

The study focuses on their initial artistic production and presents the elements that appear from the beginning, as well as how they evolve and become part of their later acclaimed style.

Joint effort by curators and researchers

The team of curators invited art historians and theoreticians to study each artist by creating matchings.

The following matchings were created:

  • Spyros Vassiliou – Anny Malama
  • Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika – Evita Arapoglou and Ioanna Moraiti
  • Yannis Tsarouchis – Anna Kafetsi
  • Yiannis Moralis – Evgenios D. Matthiopoulos
  • Α. Tassos – Yannis Bolis
  • Vasso Katraki – Spyros Moschonas
  • Jannis Spyropoulos – Olga Daniilopoulou
  • Alekos Kontopoulos – Bia Papadopoulou
  • Dimitris Mytaras – Areti Leopoulou
  • Yannis Gaitis – Elena Hamalidi
  • Chryssa Romanos – Polina Kosmadaki

These matchings offer a multi-faceted and meaningful approach to understanding the early work and the evolution of these creators.
