The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection loaned a rare ancient bronze coin from Malaga, Spain, dating from the late 3rd century BCE, to the exhibition “Fire and Coin – Archaeology and Fire”.

The obverse depicts a head of Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire. The god was also a skilled blacksmith, hence the pair of tongs visible behind his head.

The reverse depicts a head of the god Helios (the Sun).

The exhibition was part of the “Environment and Culture 2012” countrywide programme. It focused on the importance of fire as a driving force of civilisation and a divine gift to humanity. It also showed the unbreakable bond between fire as a symbol and our cultural heritage.
