The Alpha Bank Art Collection is participating in the exhibition “Painting in the Ionian Islands: 18th-19th century” by loaning 1 important work of art by Charalambos Pachis:
A distinctive, panoramic view of 19th-century Corfu, with careful rendering and soft hues. In this work Pachis combines detail with a more poetic interpretation of daily life.
The inclusion of this work in the exhibition showcases the landscape tradition of the Ionian school and the contribution of the artist to painting in the Ionian Islands.
The exhibition is hosted to commemorate the 200-year anniversary since the founding of the Ionian Academy.
It is hosted in the renovated exhibition hall of the National Gallery, Corfu Annex.
The exhibits showcase the artistic production of the Ionian Islands from the late Venetian rule to the decades after the Islands joined Greece and highlight the crucial formative phase of modern Greek art.
The narrative starts with works by the naturalist successors of Panagiotis Doxaras, as well as by Byzantine-inspired artists.
It then presents the work of Ionian artists who studied at Italian academies from the late 18th century onwards, marking the rise of the so-called “Ionian School”.
It spans the period from the Greek Revolution to the late 19th century and showcases the transition from the Ionian region to the newly-founded Greek state, as well as the effect of Ionian painting in Athens and the broader area of the Adriatic Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The exhibition presents, among others, works by: Georgios Avlichos, Angelos Giallinas, Panagiotis Doxaras, Konstantinos Iatras, Nikolaos Kallergis, Dionysios Kallivokas, Nikolaos Kantounis, Nikolaos Koutouzis, Vikentios Bocatsiampis, Nikolaos Xydias-Typaldos, Charalambos Pachis, Gerasimos Pitsamanos, Ieronymos Plakotos, Eleni Prosalenti, Pavlos Prosalentis, Spyridon Prosalentis, Periklis Tsirigotis, Dionysios Tsokos and Raffaello Ceccoli.
