The Numismatic Collection presented its new travelling museum kit to teachers on Crete
Following last year’s successful collaboration with the Economics Education Sector of Crete and the Herakleio Secondary Education Directorate, the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection once again hosted an online educational meeting for teachers on 05.02.2025. The aim was to present its new educational programme, “A journey through the world of money”.
During the meeting, Crete’s Educational Advisor on Economics, Giorgos Vouzaxakis, talked about the outcomes of last year’s collaboration and the good practices applied. Then, the curator of the Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, presented the content and educational objectives of the new programme and underlined the contribution of the Numismatic Collection to education.
Warm welcome by the teachers
A total of 20 high-school teachers from all prefectures of Crete attended the meeting, while many of them had also participated in the previous school year’s event.
The teachers expressed strong interest in the enriched topics of the new educational programme, exchanged ideas and thoughts for its implementation within different courses, and discussed about the stimuli and learning opportunities it can provide for students in remote areas.
Aims of the programme
The “A journey to the world of money” educational programme consists of 2 main sections aiming to:
- Familiarise students with the history of money in the Greek world, from the time of its invention up to the euro and the modern, digital transaction methods.
- Promote financial literacy.
- Increase awareness towards issues related to sound money management.
How the students benefit
Through the new educational programme in the form of a travelling museum kit, children approach the concept of money and transactions from different perspectives.
Students gain knowledge on the:
- Means of transaction prior to the invention of coins
- History and evolution of coins
- Rules of coin iconography and the coins of the Greek world throughout the centuries
At the same time, they:
- Get information on the euro and the European Economic Area.
- Become familiar with terms related to modern transaction methods, e.g. physical money, plastic money and digital banking.
- Understand the difference between needs and wants, with the aim of developing a sound consumer mindset and avoiding consumerism.
- Discover modern financial options, so they can protect themselves and make wise financial choices.
- Learn how to adopt positive financial attitudes, such as evaluating and prioritising expenses, and saving.
- Become familiar with recording their income and expenses, and planning a budget to manage their day-to-day finances more efficiently.
