A retrospective on the work of Nikos Alexiou
The exhibition is a major retrospective presenting the oeuvre of Nikos Alexiou, a distinguished Greek artist closely associated with contemporary Greek art.
The Contemporary Art Museum of Crete continues to explore the relationship between art and society. It revisits the oeuvre of this important artist through an exhibition that aims to present the public with representative works from across his entire artistic career.
The exhibition artworks were sourced from Popi Alexiou, the Alpha Bank Art Collection, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete.
The creator's artistic approach
Alexiou’s work moved between the local and the international, between meticulous craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression.
These elements are clearly reflected in The Grid, a work that exemplifies the creator’s artistic approach. Using reed cane and string, the artist transforms simple materials into a complex, poetic structure centred on memory, movement and light.
Through the rhythmic repetition and transparency of the form, the work creates an open space that allows the viewer’s gaze to pass through it, resulting in an immersive experience that changes according to the viewer’s presence and movement.
A few words about the exhibition's curator
The exhibition is curated by Maria Marangou, artistic director of the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete.
Commenting on the occasion, she noted, “In Alexiou’s work, manual work, time, silence and memory come together to form a visual universe in which the fragile and the timeless coexist.”
