What the publication includes

The publication City Block 19. The Presence of Alpha Bank in the Centre of Athens includes 7 chapters, titled “7 pictures”. They recount the history of the Alpha Bank buildings, which take up a large part of block 19 in the centre of Athens.

These buildings are:

  • Alpha Bank Administration (40 Stadiou Street).
  • Ionian Bank (12 Pesmazoglou Street).
  • Popular Bank (45 Panepistimiou Street).
  • Nikoloudi (41 Panepistimiou Street).

The publication presents how the buildings and the city itself changed over a span of over 100 years. The presentation is based on archive material, press clippings, historical sources, as well as contemporary photographic evidence.

The catalogue of a remarkable exhibition

The publication accompanied the photography exhibition titled “City Block 19. The Presence of Alpha Bank in the Centre of Athens,” held at the exhibition hall of the Alpha Bank central building between November 2009 and June 2010.

Archive photographic material and contemporary pictures showed how the cityscape of this important section of the historic centre of Athens evolved through the years.

The photographs followed the different changes in the use of the buildings, as well as the process through which this city centre block transformed over time to reach its current form.
