What the publication includes

The publication Dimitris Galanis. The Illustrated Books is the result of research carried out by the Alpha Bank Art Collection and the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation (MIET) in the years 2008-2013.

The source material for this research were books illustrated by Dimitris Galanis, which are part of the rich collections of Alpha Bank and MIET. The research included documents from the Montmartre Museum (La Société Le Vieux Montmartre) in Paris.

Books, albums and brochures illustrated by the artist in the period 1904-1962 were also recorded.

The catalogue of a remarkable exhibition

The publication accompanied the exhibition “Dimitris Galanis. The Illustrated Books” held for the first time at the Eynard Mansion of the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation (MIET) in Athens. Part of the exhibition was hosted from 26 May to 26 September 2015 at the MIET bookstore in Thessaloniki.

The exhibition showcased a number of the publications included in the Alpha Bank and MIET collections that contain typical samples of Galanis’ prints.

The 3 introductory texts of the publication

Three introductory texts follow the preface by the director of MIET, Dionysis Kapsalis:

  • Text 1: Irene Orati, curator of the Alpha Bank Art Collection, gives a detailed presentation of Galanis’ illustrations for the first time.
  • Text 2: Angelos Drakogiorgos, PhD candidate at the University of Burgundy, gives an account of the printmaker’s first years in Paris.
  • Text 3: Giorgos Matthiopoulos, professor of Graphic Arts at the Athens University of Applied Sciences, writes about the art of books in Europe at the time.

The artist’s personal records

The entire personal record of the artist is kept today at a wing of the Montmartre Museum in Paris. That was also the home and workshop of Dimitris Galanis until 1965.
