Georgia Damopoulou, Averoff Vineyards

Black weave, hanging from a rod against a wall.

The Averoff Vineyards is a piece by a contemporary artist, Georgia Damopoulou. The piece was created on the occasion of the 30th anniversary from the founding of the Averoff Gallery in Metsovo, Greece. It is a weave made of resin and twine. It hangs at the entrance of the Papastratos building, which hosts some of the Alpha Bank divisions.

A tribute to Metsovo

The Averoff Vineyards seem to represent the map of Metsovo. It is a manual work, combining topographic design with the practices of embroidery and weaving. The piece is made of resin and twine.

The composition showcases the locations of the vineyards in the area, which follow the shape of the land, like layers. This is accomplished through a rendering of the area with its geophysical traits, the rises, the gaps, the curves, the impressions, and the play of light and shadow, falling on the mountains and slopes.

An impressive composition

The composition of the weaving follows an abstract linear flow. It is impressive and fierce, offering the audience the joy of discovery.

Damopoulou, through the rhythm of the design and the weave, was able to incorporate the animals and plants of the area. That makes the composition even richer.

The weaved design hangs from a copper rod. It gradually develops on a twine mesh.

According to the artist, everything is orchestrated on that mesh, which serves as an imaginary frame holding the design. This creates the coordinates of the land, like a kind of memory.
