Alpha Bank celebrated the International Museum Day with an educational initiative on “Coins and Biodiversity – Museum and the Environment”. The event took place on 17 and 18 May 2023 at the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank on the island of Corfu.

151 students from 5 primary schools on Corfu participated in the educational initiative, which was designed based on the theme “Museums, Sustainability and Quality of Life”. This was the theme put forward by the International Council of Museums for 2023.

The students attended a presentation on “Biodiversity depicted on coins” at the permanent exhibition area of the Museum. They got to know the flora and fauna depicted on the iconography of coins, from antiquity to the present, through:

  • Discussion
  • Use of educational material

They also participated in an interactive knowledge quiz for the types of plants and animals depicted on the banknotes of the permanent exhibition. This way, they came into contact with original museum exhibits.

Then the students played mystery and creativity games, and participated in tests about environmental issues. These tests aimed to highlight the benefits of recycling for the environment, as well as the key principles of circular economy. At the end of the event, the children got to know the life cycle of a banknote, through an original presentation.

Through these experiential activities, the students became acquainted with biodiversity, recycling, circularity and sustainability. They also comprehended how important it is for all of us to contribute to protecting the planet.

This initiative was put together in partnership with the SciCo (Science Communication) educational organisation. It focused on 3 UN sustainable development goals, as put forward by the International Council of Museums:

  • Goal 3 – Good health and well-being
  • Goal 13 – Climate action
  • Goal 15 – Life on land: biodiversity protection
