Activity Review for the International Museum Day 2026
For yet another year, the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank on Corfu joined in the International Museum Day celebrations with a 5-day activity inspired by the periodic exhibition “Greece, an iconic land. Art in the Greek National Tourism Organisation posters”.
From 13.05.2026 to 17.05.2026, visitors had the opportunity to see the GNTO tourism posters and take part in a workshop to create their own.
Posters as a vessel for storytelling and culture
Those who attended the activity had the chance to become familiar with the historical evolution of the Greek tourism posters through an experiential process. It was a way to understand how Greece was internationally promoted as a tourist destination and a land of high aesthetics, culture and inspiration.
At the same time, visitors came to know the artists who left their mark on the golden era of GNTO’s artistic output, highlighting the role of the poster as a vessel for storytelling and cultural identity.
A creative workshop for all ages
This was an organic part of the creative workshop “Posters: uniting a divided world”. After gaining a fair overview of the history and importance of the tourism posters, participants were given the opportunity to create their own posters for Greece or Corfu.
Young and old used collage techniques and a variety of materials to create colourful and original compositions, showcasing their imagination, personal perspective and relationship with the land.
Connecting the audience with our cultural heritage
These creations were displayed in the exhibition area, turning it into a lively gallery that was changing and evolving day by day.
Their presence enhanced the interaction among visitors, giving people of different ages and groups the chance to talk, exchange views and observations, and share experiences. As a whole, the activity:
- Connected the audience with the cultural heritage of the tourism posters.
- Encouraged creative expression.
- Showcased the importance of outreach for museums, as a living space of culture.
The activity in numbers
The creative workshop ran for 5 days, from 13.05.2026 to 17.05.2026:
- School groups attended the first 3 days, with 210 students and 21 accompanying teachers.
- The workshop was open to the general public over the weekend, and a total of 85 people participated.
The response to the activity was particularly warm, creating a lively environment for learning, inspiration and creative interaction.
