To celebrate the International Museum Day on 18 May, the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank is hosting the event “Posters: uniting a divided world”, on the sidelines of the exhibition “Greece, an iconic land. Art in the Greek National Tourism Organization posters (1929-1976)”.

The role of tourism posters in shaping Greece’s international image

The event is an open, participatory and creative experience inviting visitors to find out more about the decisive role of tourism posters in shaping Greece’s image abroad.

At the same time, it highlights the relationship between art, culture and visual identity.

Posters as a means of communication and storytelling

Posters are at the heart of this event. As a means of communication and storytelling, they act as a bridge, carrying images, emotions, ideas and values across borders and eras.

A creative experience for all ages

The event is addressed to people of all ages, who are invited to create their own poster for Greece. Visitors will be inspired by the aesthetics of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO), while the creative process is based on their personal gaze, their imagination and the modern Greek experience.

Through the creative workshop, the public will get to:

  • Find out about the history and significance of the Greek tourism posters.
  • Discover how Greece was promoted internationally as a tourist destination, but also as a source of inspiration, aesthetics and culture.
  • Get to know the prominent artists who left their mark on the golden age of GNTO artistic production.
  • Understand the role of posters in storytelling and cultural identity.

Museums Uniting a Divided World

Since 1977, ICOM’s initiative to celebrate an International Museum Day has become an annual event, aiming to highlight the role of museums as living spaces for culture, knowledge and social exchange.

This year’s theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World”, highlights the powerful role museums play as bridges fostering understanding and communication and bringing people and cultures together.

Today, in particular, at a time of increased social challenges, museums are expected to offer open and accessible spaces that encourage dialogue and inclusion.

In this spirit, the Banknote Museum of Ionian Bank is actively joining this year’s festivities with events that promote connection, knowledge, creativity and the exchange of ideas.
