Exhibition on the history of currency in Veria

The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection participated in the exhibition “Greek Banknotes – Historical Evidence. Coins in the Ancient Greek World”, on the history of currency. The exhibition was hosted by the Primary School of Kouloura, Imathia, at the Antoniadios Stegi Centre for Literature and Arts in Veria, from 10 to 17 April 2019. The history and evolution of currency was presented, from the time of its invention, in the mid-7th century BCE, until the advent of the euro. The material was donated by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection.

2 events were held on the sidelines of the exhibition:

On Wednesday 10 April 2019, the Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, gave a lecture on “The Fascinating History of Currency. A Historical Timeline”. The currencies of antiquity, as well as the Roman, Byzantine and Medieval eras were presented, along with the currencies of the modern Greek State. Special emphasis was placed on the Ancient Macedonian coins.

On Thursday 11 April 2019 an educational seminar was held on “When Culture Co-travels with School”, for the teachers of the Imathia Prefecture. The speakers were representatives of educational and cultural institutions. The following subjects were discussed during the seminar:

  • The “Nomos-Nomizo-Nomisma” educational programme of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection in the form of the educational suitcase.
  • The museum education student activities.
  • The Erasmus+ programmes that aim to expand the school environment.

Representatives from the world of culture and education, as well as representatives of the local government from the Imathia Prefecture attended the events.

The exhibition, the lecture and the seminar were hosted by the Primary School of Kouloura, Imathia, in collaboration with the Directorate of Primary Education of the Imathia Prefecture, the 3rd Regional Centre of Educational Design (PEKES) of Central Macedonia, the community development corporation (KEPA) of the Municipality of Veria, and the support of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection.
